Joe Jonas is 22 now and looking to reposition himself outside the context of the Jonas Brothers with “Fastlife,” an upcoming solo release whose sexy R&B vibe could take Jonas closer to the upper reaches of Billboard’s Hot 100 than the Brothers’ brand of effervescent power-pop has been in years.
Here’s what he had to say about launching a solo career, what it means for the family business, how it felt to write a song with Chris Brown and how he came to rock those little tennis shorts in the Vampire Weekend video for “Giving Up the Gun.”
Q: How does it feel to be out on your own?
A: It’s fun. They’ve been supportive, so that’s the biggest thing for me. I mean, there are times, obviously, where I wish they could be out here experiencing the things that I’m experiencing. But at the end of the day, it’s just a dream come true, to be able to do what I love and present this new music to my fans and see them like it.
Q: You seem to be moving in more of an R&B direction with this new material. What inspired that?
A: I’ve always been inspired by that type of music. I’ve always listened to that, growing up, and I’ve always wanted to be able to one day create something different.
Q: You co-wrote your first single, “See No More,” with Chris Brown. What’s the story there?
A: It was kind of a mutual thing. I knew somebody that worked with Chris and vice versa, and we kind of just decided to get in the studio one day to listen to each other’s music. We weren’t even trying to work together. And we realized quickly that it was meant to be. So I recorded one of his songs that he wrote, intended for me, and I ended up writing a song with him, “See No More.”
Q: So will the other song he wrote for you be on the album?
A: Yeah, it’s one of my favorite tracks. It’s called “Lighthouse.” It’s a dream come true.
